Cobb Estate and Sam Merrill Trail hike

Recently, I headed to Altadena with the intention of exploring some abandoned gold mines.  Between incorrect directions that I had printed out, and lack of cell phone service, things didn’t quite go as planned.  Instead of mines and caves, I found myself on the Sam Merrill Trail.  I realized I was probably going the wrong way about a mile into the hike, but decided to keep going and see what I’d find.  I ended up on the ruins of “White City” on top of Echo Mountain. In the 1890’s, Thaddeus Lowe built a railway to transport passengers up Rubio Canyon to the Echo Mountain Resort Area.

I still had a few hours of daylight left, so I hiked back down to my starting point and headed down a different trail that led me past a tin roofed underground reservoir and to a narrow and sometimes treacherous path that ran parallel to a stream.  I was nearly out of daylight, so I didn’t get to explore further, but I feel I was close to finding the mines.  A hike for another day…

Mickey Rourke immortalized at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre!

Mickey Rourke was forever immortalized at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on October 31, 2011 as he became the 254th celebrity to have his hand and footprints set in concrete in front of the theatre.   It couldn’t have happened to a more deserving man, in my opinion. From Diner to Rumble Fish to Barfly to the Wrestler and everything in between, he has long been my favorite actor.

Eric Roberts and Jon Favreau both spoke and many of Mickey’s longtime friends and colleagues were in attendance.  You can see more in the video I shot.  Mickey gave a heartfelt speech with an introduction by Eric Roberts.

Electric Child 10/26/11 Key Club West Hollywood, CA

Electric Child are a Los Angeles based powerhouse Rock n Roll band.  I recently caught them at the Key Club where they opened up for the Sweet.  They are as real and raw as the East Hollywood ghetto rehearsal space they practice in.  No gimmicks- just straight up rock that will make you feel good.  Their EP, available on iTunes, is the kind of high energy music I like to play when I’m getting ready to go out on a Saturday night!

The band is: Craig Alexander (Vocals), Andres Villarruel (Guitar, Background Vocals), Stevie Zapp (Bass, Background Vocals), and Mike Graham (Drums, Background Vocals).  YES, you read that correctly- vocal arrangements from all four guys.  It makes for a really full sound!  Personally, I’ve always been a fan of bands that do this- King’s X, Def Leppard etc.  You can check out them out here:  http://www.electricchild.com and see them live at the Key Club on November 12, 2011 with Pretty Boy Floyd and CrashDiet.

Thin Lizzy and Black Label Society opened and Lady Starlight DJ’ed between bands- keeping an electrified energy level all night!
