HRA Studios and Foundation (formerly the Hollywood Rock Academy) is a creative community that allows people, young and old, to find their voices through musical and artistic expression! In a band or want to join a band? This is the place for you to learn, jam, record, write, get coaching and just have fun! If you are interested in learning to play music, but are not quite sure what instrument you’d like to play, HRA Studios is for you too. You can sign up for private lessons where you can explore a variety of intruments until you find one that suits you. Have music that you’d like to record? HRA has that covered too! They have a recording studio right on site!
Proceeds from all HRA events, concerts, and CD sales go directly to the chosen community supported by the HRA Foundation. Much of the work that HRA does involves at risk youth, children with chronic illness and the elderly…finding a way to give them a positive light through music and art.
I recently sat down with HRA President and founder, Matt Wilczynski to see what was new with HRA and share the wonderful work he is doing with all of you. Matt and I go way back. Really…check THIS out.
Christy: How did HRA come about?
Matt: After teaching myself all of the rock instruments (guitar, bass, drums, etc…) because I was too shy and self-concious to start my own band – and it kept me out of trouble – I decided to be a film composer like Danny Elfman. After moving to LA in 2001, that dream came true…..but quickly turned into a nightmare (note: do NOT work in reality TV). So, feeling lost, I started teaching guitar lessons…then bass lessons….vocals lessons….drums…..hell, let’s just put a band together. I did. The kids did all original music, and I somehow talked Slash into coming to an Elementary School to play “Paradise City” with 9 year olds. The rest of the story (the last 8 years) is pretty much a blur…
Christy: Over the past 8 years, how has it evolved?
Matt: Starting with rock music was cool, but with the emergence of all of these corporate “rock schools” I decided to keep our DYI method of having REAL bands play their own music. Not always easy. Try keeping a band together on a normal day. Now, have all of the members be 13 years old with crushes on each other!
In keeping it all focused on original material, we also branched out into making original films, literature, theater and even sketch comedy.
Mostly though – HRA is a place for kids that have chronic illness to come and write a song about what they are feeling. It’s a place for the elderly to find a renewed creative purpose. A haven for those with mental illness to unleash their voice in a positive and healthy CREATIVE way.
Christy: In addition to the year round activities that happen here, do you have any new programs coming up?
Matt: We start our next Winter Camp on Monday December 19th, with a new session each week through January 9th. At our camp, you do more than have a “rock band” – the kids produce an original film, create “Funny or Die” style sketches, publish a comic book – whatever I need to do to get them off the cellphone and away from the computer.
Christy: Sounds awesome! I think a lot of us could benefit from that!

It’s my favorite time of the year in Los Angeles…jackets at night, t-shirt/shorts temps during the day, festive lights dripping from palm trees and the best present for fans of Rock N Roll, the annual Camp Freddy Xmas Roxy residency!
Every time I walk out of the Roxy after one of their shows, stunned and euphoric, I wonder “How will they EVER compete with THAT one?” Then they go and do something like they did Friday night- bring to the stage PAUL STANLEY! We are halfway through the 2011 extravaganza…two shows remain: December 16th and 23rd (both sold out).
The first two nights looked like this:
Camp Freddy: Matt Sorum, Billy Morrison, Dave Navarro, Donovan Leitch and Chris Chaney. (Dave and Chris were performing with their other band, Jane’s Addiction, on the 9th, so Steve Stevens filled in on guitar and Chris Wyse on bass for the entire show)
Friends: Franky Perez, Mark McGrath, Steve Jones, Skinhead Rob, Steve Stevens, Sebastian Bach, Billy Idol, Chris Wyse, Tyler Glenn, Branden Campbell, Billy Duffy, Linda Perry, Fred Durst, Stephen Pearcy, Warren DeMartini, George Lynch, Tommy Thayer, Evan Stanley (Paul’s son) AND- Paul Stanley!
Songs:
Night 1 (December 2, 2011): Relax, Suffragette City, Helter Skelter, Hells Bells, Baba O’Reilly, Wonderwall, Fight For Your Right, Fly, EMI, Crazy Train, I Remember You, Whole Lotta Love, Silly Thing, Shakin All Over, LA Woman, Rebel Yell
Night 2 (December 9, 2011): Relax, 7 Nation Army, 20th Century Boy, Search and Destroy, Anarchy in the UK, Fire Woman, Helter Skelter, War Pigs, Round & Round, Tobacco Road, Creep, Whole Lotta Love, You Really Got Me, Sweet Emotion, Strutter, All Right Now, You Shook Me, Lick It Up.

December 9, 2011:
On Thanksgiving, I spent the day visiting all of the places in LA that I’m thankful for…from Malibu for sunrise to the Rainbow for a nightcap!
The more I live, the more I appreciate how lucky I am. I had a truly wonderful upbringing in a small New England town. When the holidays rolled around, our family gatherings were full of love and laughter- no drama or fighting. Special thanks to my family for giving me the foundation that has enabled me to see the positive first, and for instilling a child like wonder that I have somehow managed to hang onto. Now that I’ve made Los Angeles my home, I decided to spend this Thanksgiving stopping at all of the places that make this city so special to me.
I’ll let the photos speak for my day, but it went like this: Sunrise on the PCH in Malibu, walk on Zuma Beach, Santa Monica pier, the Grove, Canter’s, Elvis Presley’s star, hike in Runyon Canyon…headed home to grab the vegan meal I’d picked up at Doomie’s restaurant the night before, checked into room #32 of the Alta Cienega motel (Jim Morrison’s sometimes home between 1968-1970) where I listened to the Doors and ate my meal. Finally off to the Rainbow to meet some friends for a cocktail. It was an awesome day filled with all the things I love. I’m grateful for my health, family, friends and this wonderful city!
