June 23, 2012 Rebel exhibit at the Curve/MOCA in Hollywood, CA
I did the “right thing” and went to the Viper Room last night to see Owl! Their show a few months ago at the Roxy was great, but this was even better! The Viper Room walls wrapped the crowd in a steamy, electric veil of energy that Owl quickly shattered. Chris Wyse’s bass (upright bass and bow at times) and vocals, Jason’s guitar slide (which at one point was a shot glass), plus Dan’s ferocious drumming complimented each other beautifully. Owl’s set was hard rocking and relentless, comprised mostly of songs from their most recent release, “The Right Thing”. Available on iTunes and the band’s website.
Owl is: Chris Wyse (Bass, Upright Bass, vocals), Dan Dinsmore (Drums), Jason Achilles Mezilis (Guitar, vocals)
At the moment, I don’t see any additional shows on Owl’s site, but you can catch Chris playing in his other band, you know, The Cult, beginning July 25, 2013. Dates HERE
Dot Hacker is one of my favorite bands to see live, so much so that I drove to the desert to see them last Sunday! They hadn’t played in a while…Josh’s other band, (you know, RHCP…) has kept him busy, but they sounded great and played several songs off of their debut album, Inhibition, plus a new song (Floating up the Stairs) and a Tears for Fears cover (Memories Fade). Each member of the band is so talented and their songs are beautifully crafted! When the sounds are layered together live, it creates a sonic wall that just engulfs you.
Pappy and Harriet‘s is an interesting venue; a restaurant and saloon situated in Pioneertown serving as a gateway to the Mojave desert, the Joshua Tree and good times. They have great food, lots of parking, welcome motorcycles, Lagunitas on tap, pool tables, friendly staff and a great booking agent. Their calendar always has interesting, quality music. I’m glad I finally made the trip for a concert, and not just a pit stop to/from Joshua Tree.
Dot Hacker’s next Los Angeles gig is at the Troubdour on June 29th, where they are opening again for ZAVALAZ. The show is sold out. Other tour dates can be found on their website: http://dothacker.org

Side note: They opened for ZAVALAZ, which is a new band by Cedric Bixler-Zavala (The Mars Volta and At The Drive In.) I was told that I could photograph Dot Hacker, but that ZAVALAZ had a strict no photo/video policy, which I respected. Below, are the photos of Dot Hacker:
Dot Hacker is: Josh Klinghoffer (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Clint Walsh (guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), Jonathan Hischke (bass) and Eric Gardner (drums).
My adventure continued onto Joshua Tree. Photos HERE
