On Monday, November 18, 2013 I was lucky enough to attend the only 2013 United States  Kings of Chaos gig. It was held at the Avalon Theater in Hollywood, CA and benefited Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project.

Kings of Chaos is a “Supergroup” comprised of legendary rock n roll musicians. Performing on Monday were: Matt Sorum, Glenn Hughes, Slash, Duff McKagen, Steve Stevens, Franky Perez, Corey Taylor and Juliette Lewis. The end of the show even featured a surprise guest, Billy Ray Cyrus on backing vocals!

It was an incredible night of music that included an unplugged set (a great preview into Matt Sorum’s upcoming solo project, as he performed an acoustic song called “The Sea”,  a breathtaking performance of “Mistreated” by Glenn Hughes and a lovely 3 song set by singer and animal activist, Arielle) followed by a VERY plugged in rockin’ set by the collective powerhouse, Kings of Chaos! The concert was an benefit for Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project. If you’ve seen or heard about the documentary, “The Cove”, you know that horrendous acts of violence and cruelty against dolphins are happening every year in Taiji, Japan.  You may know that Matt Sorum is a humanitarian, working hard to keep music in schools with his Adopt the Arts Foundation, but he is also an animal activist. He has become involved in helping the Dolphin Project, even traveling to Japan to protest along side Ric O’Barry.  Rock n Roll and animal rights came together on Monday night to help this worthwhile cause.

Ric O’Barry spoke at the beginning of the event and introduced a heart wrenching clip which began with his start as a dolphin trainer on the TV show Flipper continuing through recent footage from the Cove.  After seeing the effects of dolphins in captivity first hand, Ric has devoted his life to rescuing, freeing and protecting dolphins. It is cruel to confine them to a tank.
