Electric Child rehearsal studio photos

I’m happy to report that Electric Child has a new bass player, Zac Arthur.  That means two things…they will start playing shows again soon, and new band photos!  I headed down to their rehearsal studio to meet Zac and get some updated pictures last week.  They practice in the same place that an early version of Guns N’ Roses once did.  The building, and notorious parties, are mentioned in Slash’s 2007 autobiography.  You can literally smell the debauchery as you walk in…it’s ripe and it’s 100% Rock N Roll!  Check out the photos and look out for their upcoming shows in LA.

CRASH CART: Music to jumpstart your heart and bring you back to life!

Recently, I spent a windy Saturday morning with Kenny D and Pat Lydon on a photo shoot for their new band, CRASH CART.  Afterwards, I sat down with Kenny to learn a little bit more about their collaboration.
CRASH CART are, left to right, Kenny D and Pat Lydon.
How did you meet?
We met in the San Fernando Valley growing up as kids in junior high. Pat built a recording studio, and so that is where I and others hung out after school & sometimes even during school..haha! Pat recorded the very 1st session of me in the studio playing right-handed drums. I was a left-handed drummer all my life and switched to right-handed, cause every kit I got on was right-handed, even when attending music school at Dick Grove School of Music, which is where I officially switched to playing right-handed.
What made you decide to start a band?
Well we we’re not getting any younger, so now was a better time if any to start. We wanted to have a place for our music to be heard besides ourselves, cause we’ve been making music since 2009, mostly doing it for fun and we really never thought once about calling ourselves a real band until now. Cause when you see a band, it’s usually not 2 dudes.
Previously, I’ve played independently, and with a couple of other bands. I toured the world w/Snoop Dogg as the band’s drum technician, and also drum teched for Enrique Iglesias, and many others.
Pat has been in a zillion bands, and has recorded, engineered, and produced tons of bands, as well as music for TV. At one time, Pat was consumed playing in 5 different L.A. bands at the same time, a couple of noteworthy ones being “Kiss The Monkey” and “Lost Breed”. Pat was also 1st asked to play bass for Rage Against The Machine, but turned them down.
Who are your influences?
We both have a lot of different influences. Pat’s are Led Zeppelin, Talking Heads, Primus, Elvis Costello, Opeth, and Mastodon.
Mine are a variety of Metal, Funk, R&B, Jazz, Rock, Hip Hop, Gospel, Afro-Beat, Punk, Latin, or anything new or that hasn’t been heard.
My 1st influence was The Jackson 5. That’s where I used to grab my dad’s tambourine and started shaking it to “ABC” at 5 yrs old. In the 70’s, my parents had a lot of parties and I was exposed to a lot of R&B, Motown, Santana, Bob Dylan, The Beatles. As a kid, I grew up in the house where Iron Butterfly lived in, and had Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna as our next store neighbors, so I was always surrounded by great music. There isn’t really anything I won’t listen to, I always like to keep my ears open and never hold back to music, even if it’s not good, I still learn new “do’s” and “dont’s” about it. I’m generally influenced by artists that can change the world, give social awareness, and uplift the human spirit. Artists like Speech & Arrested Development, Kirk Franklin, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti and son Seun Kuti. I also respect artists that represent the working class, like Bruce Springsteen, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger just to name a few. I also dig what Tom Morello was doing with The Nightwatchman & now Springsteen.
How did the name CRASH CART come about?
By flook all of the sudden! Just recently Pat says to me, “Hey, I got a cool name for a band, CRASH CART. We should start a band”. I asked him, what the heck is a crash cart? When he told me, I found myself staring at one for the very 1st time the following day while my mother was hospitalized and all most died. So when I saw that, it made sense, it was a sign from above that it was meant to be.
What comes next?
We will be working on more music in the studio and hope maybe to play a few shows. It would be great to play & meet some new CRASH CART fans!
Cool!  Sounds great!

Dot Hacker 3/14/12 The Troubadour West Hollywood, CA

By the time I made my way into the Echoplex the first time I saw Dot Hacker in 2009, their set was almost over and the reunited Jane’s Addiction were preparing to take stage.  I caught the last song and thought, “that was interesting, I’ll have to catch them next time”.  But, time passed and I never had a chance to see them again until Wednesday night.  Seems like that was with good reason…they hadn’t played in two years!

Dot Hacker played for about an hour and fifteen minutes and were riveting from start to finish.  Individually, they are all fantastic musicians.  Combined, they layer a really interesting and unique sound.  This is the type of band that harnesses the attention and respect of the audience.  I highly recommend checking out their EP on iTunes or Amazon; it’s well worth the $4!  Their first full length album, Inhibition, will be released later this spring.

Dot Hacker are:  Josh Klinghoffer (vocals, guitar, keyboard),  Jonathan Hischke (bass), Clint Walsh (Backing Vocals, Guitar, Keyboard) and Eric Gardner (drums).

Them Hills opened for Dot Hacker and I really enjoyed their set too.  Here are some photos:

The Protectors of Hollywood Boulevard

At first glance, walk and whiff, it certainly appears that Hollywood Boulevard has long lost it’s glamour.  But it’s still there…you just need to know where to look.  As the city sleeps and glitter fades, icons of yesteryear watch over the street of dreams…

Gigantour 2/24/12 Gibson Amphitheater, Universal City, CA

Gigantour 2/24/12

Ears ringing and grin on my face, I awoke today to tell you about Gigantour last night at the Gibson Amphitheater!
First up, was Lacuna Coil.  Though I didn’t photograph them, I caught the last few songs of their set.  Melodic and heavy- I liked what I heard and intend to check out a full set next time they are in LA.

Volbeat were on next and I was really looking forward to seeing them for the first time- I really dig their metal, punk, rockabilly sound.  I absolutely love Michael Poulsen’s voice…which to me has a deep, cool, whiskey soaked sound which reminds me a little of one of my other fave’s, Keith Caputo.  On guitar, just for this tour, was Hank Shermann of Mercyful Fate!  I was really impressed by them and plan to buy some more of their music this weekend.

By now, the venue should have been packed, but the early set time and LA Friday traffic seemed to be delaying the audience.  If you missed Volbeat’s set, make sure you see them next time they are in town!

Next up, the band that is the reason most people in the venue got into rock & roll, metal (and music in general) in the first place, Motörhead!  Year after year, they have been consistently kicking your ass and last night was no exception.  They opened with Bomber and proceeded to rip through a set that pulled from several of their 20 albums! (How many bands can say THAT?) Their set ended earlier than I would have liked…just under an hour, I’d estimate. But that’s what happens with 4 bands and curfews.  Highlights for me were the two songs they played off of 1916: The One to Sing the Blues and Going to Brazil.  It didn’t hurt that the man next to me was from Sao Paulo and going absolutely apeshit. 😉

A black curtain went up and it was time to get the stage set up for Megadeth.  In the foyer, the group of photographers were split into two groups.  Each group getting two songs.  I was in the photo pit for Trust and Foreclosure of a Dream, but regrettably missed the performance of A Tout Le Monde while I was checking my camera.  I heard that Lacuna Coil’s Cristina Scabbia came out to join Dave Mustaine on vocals.  Megadeth never disappoints me musically and although the middle of the set lost me a little, four songs off of Countdown to Extinction were A-OK to me!  I was very glad to hear She-Wolf and Ashes in Your Mouth but disappointed not to hear In My Darkest Hour and Hangar 18.
