Sunset Strip Music Festival 2014, West Hollywood, CA

SSMF kicked off Friday, September 19, 2014 with a ceremony for honorees, Jane’s Addiction, at the House of Blues! The hometown heroes were being honored with the “Elmer Valentine Award,” celebrating the band’s impact on the legacy of the Sunset Strip. Jane’s Addiction first played on the strip on October 24, 1985, when they opened for Gene Loves Jezebel at the Roxy. Their first album, an eponymous release on Triple-X records was recorded in part at a January 26, 1987 show they played at the Roxy. Although they played all over Los Angeles, the Sunset Strip is a part of their history and it was great to see them get the recognition they deserve. At the ceremony, they played an impromptu two song set, commandeering Dead Sara’s gear for Mountain Song and Ain’t No Right. The next two days were filled with an eclectic mix of music with Jane’s Addiction headlining on Saturday and Empire of the Sun getting the top bill on Sunday.
